Born on December 8, 1968, in Brooklyn, New York, Joy Reid has had an illustrious career as a television host, journalist, and political commentator. Her father hailed from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, while her mother, originally from Guyana, was a college professor and nutritionist.
Joy began her journalism career in South Florida, working for WSVN Channel 7’s morning show. However, she temporarily stepped away from reporting to join America Coming Together, a progressive organization that opposed the Iraq War and President George W. Bush.
In 2014, she joined MSNBC, where she became a prominent voice in political commentary. In 2020, she took on the role of host for The ReidOut, a weeknight commentary show.
Joy Reid’s Exit from MSNBC
After a decade with MSNBC, Joy Reid hosted her final show on February 24, 2025. The New York Times reported that MSNBC had decided to cancel The ReidOut as part of a broader lineup restructuring under the network’s new president, Rebecca Kutler.
Following the announcement, Reid took to Instagram, expressing gratitude to her supporters:
“I just want to say thank you to everyone who has reached out with kindness and encouragement, both personally and in these social media streets.”
MSNBC has yet to announce a permanent replacement for Reid. In the interim, political commentator Symone Sanders Townsend, former RNC chairman Michael Steele, and Alicia Menendez will serve as rotating anchors until a final decision is made.
